Tradition holds that the method of tying the Angelic Knot was not learned, but given.
A monk was keeping track of his daily prayers by tying knots. To frustrate his efforts, the devil would come to untie the knots he had made. When the monk reached out to God in prayer for help, the Lord revealed the means by which the sign of the cross could be tied seven times within the weave of each knot, and that the devil could not touch these knots bearing the sign of the cross.
